Years later, we see her in Pasadena, California, wealthy and surrounded by sons, daughters and grandchildren. Through characters and stories, the novel takes us to America, to the "Arab front, " and to Siberia. The Great War, then the forgotten influenza epidemic, then golden good years, then the global economic crisis (1929), then other good years, then a second world war. Martha lives through all of this, and the readers too.
